Australian Youth Digital Index 2026

Telstra Foundation

Wallis Social Research is conducting this research on behalf of the Telstra Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Telstra.

The purpose of the research is to gather insights on the digital experiences and needs of young Australians and give them a platform to have their say when it comes to how digital technology is impacting their lives.

When is the research being conducted?

There are two surveys being conducted for the Australian Youth Digital Index this year. The surveys will run between 27 July - 21 August 2026.

How long will the research take?

The main survey will take on average 20 minutes to complete.

The boost survey will take on average 7 minutes to complete.

How do I take part?

Both of these surveys will be delivered online, utilising an online panel.

Who can I contact if I have any questions?

If you have any questions about the study, please contact Wallis Social Research, quoting the project number 5274.

Telephone (toll-free): 1800 WALLIS (925 547) (Monday to Friday, 9am–5:30pm)

Qualitative component

The study also includes a qualitative component comprising 25 in-depth interviews: 15 with young people, 7 with teachers and 3 with youth workers. These interviews will provide a deeper understanding of young people's experiences and perspectives, as well as insights from the teachers and youth workers who support them.

Who is the Telstra Foundation?

For over two decades, Telstra has funded a small ‘youth and tech” social impact investment unit called the Telstra Foundation with the goal to support young people to thrive in their connected world. The Foundation works with leading community stakeholders to improve children and young peoples’ online safety and wellbeing, their digital skills and their access to essential digital services. About the Australian Youth Digital Index

The Australian Youth Digital Index project aims to identify and monitor the key drivers, issues, and opportunities that relate to young people’s relationships with digital technology. The research draws on both quantitative and qualitative data on young people’s digital lives, their attitudes, behaviours, perceptions, and experiences. The Australian Youth Digital Index is built on responses across more than 50 core questions and is based on a similar Index devised by UK domain name registry group Nominet.
