Community Power Hubs

Supporting Victoria’s transition to a renewable energy future

Sustainability Victoria engaged Wallis Social Research to measure awareness, knowledge, attitudes and levels of interest in community energy.

Sustainability Victoria (SV) is a Victorian government statutory authority. Their purpose is to support Victorians to transition to a circular, climate-resilient economy.

As part of Sustainability Victoria’s Community Power Hubs Program, seven not-for-profit organisations or social enterprises across Victoria were selected to lead a Community Power Hub in their specific geographic region. The aim of the program is to increase access to, awareness of, and involvement in community renewable energy throughout Victoria.

Background

The objective of the study was to capture data to contribute to the evaluation of Hub effectiveness in terms of increasing public awareness and knowledge of community renewable energy, and encouraging participation.

SV engaged Wallis Social Research to measure awareness, knowledge, attitudes and levels of interest in getting involved, in relation to community energy and the Community Power Hubs across the Victorian community.

Process

A sample of residents for each of the seven Victorian regions hosting Community Power Hubs were selected. The project involved a baseline measure in 2021 and will have a follow-up wave in 2022 to capture any changes in awareness, attitudes and knowledge.

An online methodology was employed using a panel sample frame in order to ensure effective coverage of each of the regions and representation across key demographics. The data was weighted back to the natural ABS population distribution within each region.
