Wallis featured in The Research Society’s newsletter, Luminate
We’re honoured to be featured in this edition of the Luminate newsletter, with The Research Society profiling the Man Box project in Unpacking the Man Box: Redefining Masculinity to End Gender-Based Violence. The article explores the methodology, strategy, impact and outcomes of this important work, which involved significant planning and careful risk mitigation. It highlights efforts to build an evidence base measuring intimate partner violence perpetration and its link to stereotypical masculine norms.
As research partner, Wallis Social Research led the national survey with over 3,500 men and facilitated online discussion groups to add lived experience to the data. We worked closely with Jesuit Social Services, applying rigorous ethical and safety protocols to ensure participant wellbeing and data quality throughout.
Insights from this work underpin two major publications shaping policy, advocacy and prevention efforts across Australia:
The Man Box 2024: Re-examining what it means to be a man in Australia, was published in February 2024 by Jesuit Social Services. It was prepared by The Men’s Project and Professor Michael Flood, and presented survey data along with selected extracts from the qualitative research.
A second report, Willing, capable and confident: men, masculinities and the prevention of violence against women examines how we can support men to engage more in actions to prevent gender-based violence, was published in August 2024 by Respect Victoria. This report was based on the focus group data conducted by Wallis, with the analysis and reporting conducted by Respect Victoria.
